U-DiVE - design and evaluation of a distributed photorealistic virtual reality environment

Mobile devices such as smartphones are increasingly being used for immersive content consumption, mostly involving 360o̱ video and 3D audio media delivery. However these smartphones, especially low-cost ones, still not able to provide the processing battery power needed a real-time rendering, visualization interaction with photorealistic virtual reality scenes. In this context, paper proposes evaluates U-DiVE (Unity-based Distributed Virtual Reality Environment), framework that decouples rendering processes from delivery, realistic VR models. The produces scene using general ray-tracing algorithm camera configured use barrel shaders correct lens distortion, allowing through inexpensive smartphone-based head-mount displays. also includes method obtain smartphone’s spatial orientation control user’s field of view, which is delivered via WebRTC streaming. analysis show allows manipulation realistic, scenes smartphone-based, head-mounted displays, low end-to-end latency, considering required continuous data
